Los Angeles Unified School District Launches African American Parent Focus Group
Dr. George Mckenna, Board Member, LAUSD - addresses parents and students at the district's African American Parent Focus Group meeting.The Los Angeles Unified School District, in response to the requests and the needs of parents across the district, launched the first-ever African American Parent Focus Group.
•The African American Parent Focus Group will be a partnership between parents, students, District and school personnel, as well as, community members. •This partnership will work collaboratively to raise the academic achievement of LAUSD African American students, increase the engagement of African American parents, guardians and caregivers, as well as, to promote acceptance and tolerance of all cultures, customs, heritages, traditions and values. |
Wes Hall, CEO, of the Institute for Student Empowerment, will act as the lead consultant for the project and work directly with Dr. Brenda Manuel, Director, Student Unit, to assist in the structuring of the program. Mr. Hall will also develop, introduce, and facilitate parent empowerment workshops that are designed to provide strategies and insights to help parents gain a deeper understanding of their role as supporters of their child's education and how-best to access the system and advocate for their children.
Parents will receive updates on the District's overall performance, data related information pertaining to African American student progress, AP opportunities and enrollment process, Gifted and Talented child support groups, student empowerment workshops, and much more.

Helping Parents Develop An "End-Game" for Their Child
"If your child shows up in my classroom without an "End-Game" the failure is not theirs." That's the message, CEO, Wes Hall, had for a group of parents at his latest empowerment session. Parents were challenged to assess their short, mid, and long term academic and career visions, put in place by them, for their child.

Felicana Public School District, Retains the Services of the Institute.
The Feliciana Public School District, through a grant from the United Way, retained the services of the Institute, to help create innovative programming designed to inspire their parents to take a more active role in the academic lives of their children. Institute reps helped design an app that the parents will use to communicate their ideas, interests, and concerns. Wes Hall, CEO for the Institute, will travel to the district 4 times during the course of the school year to meet with the parents and provide ongoing parental empowerment and instructional training workshops

Parents Receive Free Children's Book for Their Child
Parents are on the constant lookout for reading materials that can empower their children. At a recent parent empowerment session for the Los Angeles Unified School District, parents were treated to a free copy of, "Jack and the Sly Fox," written by the Institute's CEO, Wes Hall. The book helps young readers gain a deeper understanding of how to use their natural gifts and talents to attract a life of wealth and abundance. The district purchased the books and provided them to the parents, at no cost.
