An In-Depth Look Into the Academic Challenges Facing Our Young African American Males

Since 2007, the Institute for Student Empowerment has conducted one of the most in-depth independent research projects measuring the effectiveness of school districts at helping students who emanate from economically challenged environments (particularly young black males), connect a quality education to their future financial well-being.

From "Saggin To Suits"

Using our specialized curriculum in a classroom setting during the school day, we assisted in helping students on the verge of dropout, re-engage, recover credits, and eventually graduate from high school.

We created a 15-question survey designed to identify students who were not making the critical connection between education and their future well-being. In some cases 68% of those surveyed did not make the connection.

By introducing the curriculum and corrective information we were able to transform their thinking from seeing education as something they were made to do, to a source of empowerment and personal pride.

The Solution -
Helping Student Connect A Quality Education to their  Future Well-Being

How can we expect our children to vigorously participate in a process they do not value? Where springs the impetus to excel in a discipline that lacks immediate gratification and is not modeled by those in proximity? The "Flawed Assumption" in education presupposes every child who enters the classroom understands the enormous impact  education has on their future well-being. Until we address that flawed thinking and replace it with corrective information designed to level the academic playing field, the achievement gap will continue to persist and expand.

An Elective Course - Mentoring Program Curriculum - After School Program

The program can be set up in various ways, as an Elective Course, or as the curriculum that drives your mentoring program across multiple campuses (for continuity purposes), or as an After-School program. The curriculum comes equipped with a Study Guide, test, and quizzes to guide and measure retention.
The curriculum is currently being used as a part of the Los Angeles Unified School District's, "Village Mentoring Movement." The District uses the curriculum across 15 campuses district-wide.
