A 16-Year Ongoing Independent Research Project

Picture

Welcome to the
Institute for Student Empowerment

The nation's longest-running independent classroom-based study investigating how educational awareness, attitudes, and behaviors shape the academic, economic, and life trajectories of students from underserved populations.

Introducing a Tran-Theoretical
Model for Academic Change

How do we effectively reengage disengaged students? By helping them understand that education is no longer simply about earning grades—it is about acquiring, applying, and leveraging information in a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence and technology. When students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds recognize that information can be transformed into opportunity, influence, innovation, and income, they become more invested in their learning. AI and technology serve as accelerators, enabling students to access knowledge, solve problems, create value, and compete in a rapidly evolving global economy. This shift in perspective inspires students to attend school consistently, engage meaningfully in their coursework, develop positive habits, track their progress, and graduate with the skills, confidence, and adaptability needed to succeed in the future of work and life.
Proof of Concept
Through years of independent classroom-based research, we identified a recurring pattern among students experiencing academic disengagement, chronic absenteeism, behavioral challenges, and elevated dropout risk. Our findings consistently revealed a common underlying factor: many students lacked a clear understanding of the relationship between education, information, and their future quality of life. Specifically, they did not fully recognize how academic achievement influences economic mobility, career opportunities, financial stability, and overall well-being.

To test this hypothesis, we introduced a cognitive reframing model designed to reposition education as a valuable asset and information as a form of currency. Students were taught to view knowledge not simply as content to be memorized, but as a resource that could be acquired, applied, leveraged, and ultimately transformed into future opportunities. As artificial intelligence and technology continue to reshape the global economy, students also learned how information, digital literacy, and emerging technologies can be used to create value, solve problems, and increase their future earning potential.

Proof of Concept

The results were significant. As students developed a greater appreciation for the value of education and information, they became more engaged in the learning process. Participation increased, attendance improved, behavioral incidents declined, credits were recovered, and more students remained on track for graduation. These outcomes demonstrated that when students understand the practical value of education and its connection to future success, their attitudes and behaviors begin to change accordingly.
This proof of concept supports a simple but powerful premise: when students recognize education as a pathway to opportunity, empowerment, and economic mobility, they become more invested in their own success. The innovative constructs that emerged from this research are now offered as a scalable framework for educators, schools, districts, and communities committed to achieving a common goal—ensuring every student has the opportunity to graduate, thrive, and reach their full potential.

Proven Best Practices
17 Years of Classroom-Proven Success: Sharing the Strategies Behind Increased Student Engagement, Improved Behavior, and Graduation Outcomes

Our professional development workshops emerged from nearly two decades of classroom-based research and demonstrated success reengaging students who had become disconnected from the educational process. Through our innovative trans-theoretical approach, teachers began witnessing noticeable improvements in student engagement, attendance, behavior, academic performance, and overall attitude toward learning.
As word of these outcomes spread, educators increasingly sought to understand the strategies, frameworks, and underlying principles responsible for the transformation. Recognizing the potential to replicate these results on a broader scale, the Curriculum and Instruction Department invited us to share our findings and best practices at its Professional Development Summit.

The response from educators was overwhelmingly positive. What began as a request to explain successful classroom outcomes evolved into a districtwide effort to equip teachers with practical, field-tested strategies for building relationships, increasing student engagement, improving school culture, and reengaging students who were at risk of falling behind. Today, we continue to share the proven practices, insights, and innovative constructs that emerged from this work, helping educators create environments where all students can thrive.

A New And Innovative Approach To Helping Students From Underserved Communities Reshape Education

A First of It's Kind, "Educational Wealth Creation Hierarchy Chart
Picture
The Educational Wealth Creation Hierarchy™A Framework for Transforming Education into Economic OpportunityStudents often understand the destination but not the pathway.
They understand money, success, freedom, and opportunity. They understand the desire to improve their circumstances and create a better future. What is often missing is an understanding of the sequence required to achieve those outcomes.
The Educational Wealth Creation Hierarchy™ was developed to address a question that has profound implications for education:
How does a student transform education into economic mobility?
While many educational models focus on the acquisition of information, this framework explores the developmental progression that enables students to acquire, value, apply, and ultimately monetize information.
The hierarchy proposes that long-term academic, professional, and financial success is not driven by information alone. Rather, it emerges from a sequence of internal and external factors that influence how students engage with learning, opportunity, and personal development.

The HierarchyAwareness → Habits → Character → Focus → Information → Become → Attract → Money / Wealth

What Makes This Framework Different? Most educational models begin with information.
This framework begins with awareness.
The hierarchy suggests that before information can be effectively acquired and applied, students must first understand themselves, their environment, their habits, and the factors shaping their future outcomes.
Awareness influences habits.
Habits influence character.
Character influences focus.
Focus influences the acquisition of information.
Information influences who a student becomes.
Who a student becomes influences what they attract.
Money and wealth are therefore viewed not as starting points, but as outcomes.

Why It MattersStudents are routinely taught what to learn.
Far fewer are taught:
  • Why information matters
  • How habits shape outcomes
  • How awareness influences behavior
  • How education connects to economic opportunity
  • How information can be transformed into power, control, freedom, and wealth
The Educational Wealth Creation Hierarchy™ seeks to bridge that gap by helping students understand the relationship between personal development, academic achievement, and economic mobility.

A Question Worth ExploringWhat happens when students understand that education is not merely about grades, but about transforming information into opportunity?
That question lies at the heart of the Educational Wealth Creation Hierarchy™ and the broader Academic Equivalency Framework.

17 Years In the Making

The Academic Equivalency Handbook is a first-of-its-kind educational framework designed to help students understand the true value of education in the Information Age. By connecting academic achievement to opportunity, economic mobility, artificial intelligence, and wealth creation, it transforms education from something students are required to do into something they are empowered to leverage.

After 17 years of independent research and classroom implementation, we remain actively engaged with students and the realities they face every day. This ongoing connection provides firsthand insight into how young people perceive education in a rapidly changing world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, technology, social media, and the creator economy.
The Academic Equivalency Handbook was developed to bridge the gap between traditional education and the modern realities students encounter. Rather than asking students to value education simply because they are told to, the Handbook helps them understand why education matters by connecting learning to opportunity, influence, economic mobility, and personal empowerment. It reframes education as valuable information and teaches students how knowledge can be acquired, applied, leveraged, and transformed into real-world outcomes.

Relationships and Trauma
Trauma-Informed Preventive Practices

Relationship Building & Trauma-Informed Preventive Practices (TIPPs)Through our work with school districts across the nation, we have served students from a wide range of backgrounds, including those facing significant academic, behavioral, social, and emotional challenges. These experiences consistently revealed a common truth: meaningful student success is rooted in the quality of the relationships students develop with the adults who serve them. Whether addressing behavioral concerns, increasing engagement, improving attendance, or supporting academic achievement, strong and intentional relationships remain one of the most influential factors in positive student outcomes.
Our Relationship Building and Trauma-Informed Preventive Practices (TIPPs) professional development workshops equip educators with practical, proactive strategies designed to create safe, supportive, and culturally responsive learning environments. Rather than focusing solely on responding to challenging behaviors after they occur, TIPPs emphasizes understanding the experiences, circumstances, and unmet needs that often drive student behavior in the first place. This preventive approach helps educators recognize early warning signs, strengthen student connections, reduce barriers to learning, and foster a greater sense of belonging within the classroom.

Drawing from nearly two decades of classroom-based research and practitioner experience, we provide educators with evidence-informed tools, relationship-building techniques, and trauma-responsive practices that can be implemented immediately. Participants learn how to build trust, increase student engagement, de-escalate conflict, strengthen communication, and create classroom cultures that support both academic achievement and social-emotional well-being.
The effectiveness of this approach was demonstrated through our partnership with the Glendale Unified School District, where our Trauma-Informed Preventive Practices professional development workshops helped empower educators across the district with practical strategies for strengthening relationships, improving school culture, and supporting student success. By equipping educators with tools that are both accessible and actionable, we help transform classrooms into environments where students feel seen, valued, connected, and prepared to thrive.

Are You Struggling With Parent Participation? If So, Try This

Many parents harbor negative perceptions of the educational system, leading them to avoid school visits and feel unwelcome, hindering their ability to support their child's academic journey. To address this, consider framing parent involvement training as opportunities for lifelong learning and empowerment. Offer workshops on financial literacy, leadership development, entrepreneurship, and networking to parents. By integrating training that nurtures and enriches parental growth, you can cultivate a greater sense of support for their child's holistic development.
Our workshop, "How to Produce A High Achieving Student," incorporates personal, professional, and financial development for parents. By implementing these strategies we have experienced greater participation among parents at our parent involvement
workshops.

Our Story:

In 2007, Wes Hall, the CEO of the Institute for Student Empowerment, posed a critical question to then Superintendent Dr. John Mackiel of the Omaha Public School District: "How effectively are we equipping students from economically challenged backgrounds to connect an 'A' on their report card to their future financial and overall well-being?" Superintendent Mackiel, after a moment of reflection, candidly acknowledged uncertainty regarding the district's efforts along those lines. Mr. Hall would go on to pose that same question to Superintendents in districts throughout the country.

Dr. Mackiel agreed to pilot a program created by Mr. Hall entitled "The Greatness Academy." Using a combination of behavioral modification techniques, sound best practices, and culturally relevant lesson plans, Mr. Hall successfully turned around a classroom of self-proclaimed potential dropouts. The formerly disengaged students re-engaged, attended classes diligently, reclaimed lost credits, and eventually graduated. The program's significant impact attracted widespread attention throughout the city. Channel 3 news covered this phenomenon, and Susie Buffett, the daughter of Billionaire Stock Guru Warren Buffett, generously donated $100,000 to further the program's reach.

What was the "Secret Sauce"? It was quite simple. The students were engaged in a process that was initially foreign to them; therefore, they did not understand why they should vigorously participate, or participate at all. Mr. Hall designed a curriculum aimed to strengthen critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential to connecting a quality education to future financial independence. As soon as students who grew up in impoverished conditions realized that education and information could be the path to future financial success, the educational landscape shifted. Just as aspiring Rappers who discovered that lyrics over a beat can attract millions of dollars, students who understand how education and information can be quantified and monetized engage with vigor, excitement, and positive expectation.

Sixteen years later, our formula is still reshaping the academic landscape. We have essentially created a curriculum within a curriculum. We work within the school day, side-by-side with certified teachers, assuming the dual roles of "Practitioners" and "Researchers." While many of our colleagues who design curricula have been absent from the classroom for years, we operate where the rubber meets the road, directly engaging with the most challenging students.

We are ready to present our comprehensive and proven "Trans-Theoretical Model for Academic Transformation" to any district that is genuinely committed to fulfilling its mandate of graduating every student under their charge. Our educational framework includes pre and post-tests, periodic quizzes, meticulously crafted lesson plans, and a robust set of metrics.

Please reach out to us, and we will gladly share this dynamic framework with you and your team.
We offer a holistic approach to educational reform for Black and Brown students, encompassing student empowerment, professional development, parent involvement, and leadership development.
